Incident Report – October 18th 2012

At 9:00 a.m. ET on October 18th, we received notifications from our monitoring service that had become unreachable. In total, the outage lasted about 15 minutes, although the actual outage experienced by individual users varied and would have been typically much less. By 9:30 a.m. ET, operations were back to normal.
The cause of the issue was an incident with DynDNS, the DNS service provider that handles name resolution for FormAssembly. DynDNS has resolved the issue and posted more information on their website.
During the incident, some FormAssembly users were not able to access our service. However, thanks to the distributed nature of DNS resolution, and local DNS caches, it is likely that many users did not experience any downtime at all.
